We ran away for the weekend. Packed our bags and headed to Truckee California- best known for the Donner party, crystal clear water and being only a short drive from Lake Tahoe.
Where we stayed
I don’t know why, but I always go straight for digging through hotel chains when I want a weekend away. We had no luck finding anything open, for months, in Yosemite, Truckee, Tahoe… basically anywhere nice the hotels were booked.
After giving up and getting frustrated I remembered- AirBnB. We’ve had an account with their site for a few years- and yet we had never once booked a place. I don’t know what is. But it’s the truth! So we started looking and came across the Cutest Place ever in Truckee!
This is the back of the cabin. As we were driving up I felt a little sad- it seemed there were a ton of cabins, and I was worried we were going to feel very crowded. As it turned out- we had no issues at all! This wall of windows looks out onto a golf course, but we never really saw anyone on it. We did see squirrels and deer- but never people! On top of being cute and quiet- it was amazingly stocked! Carissa had left behind all the fixing for S’mores (there’s a fire pit in the back yard) and there was a wall full of videos which made the boys so excited.
Why Air BnB?
As I said, we always start searching hotels first- it’s just what we’ve always known to do, but after this I’m changing my habits, and you should too. So why should you look for an Air BnB instead of a hotel?
For us the answer is easy. We got an entire house for the cost of a decent hotel. Especially if we tried to book a kids room and a parents room at a hotel. We had a kitchen, so we could eat meals at the Cabin, instead of paying for them in the expensive tourist area of Tahoe. Our sons slept in one room, our daughter in the loft, and we slept in our own room- you just don’t get that space in a hotel. On top of that we got laundry, horse shoes, fire pit, movies (for free!), a hammock- all with the usual perks of a hotel! It felt like an incredibly spoiled vacation- the sunshine, the view out those back windows, the lake. Can I go back yet?
Pictures from the cabin
Tranquil back yard with horse shoes, fire pit, hammock and plenty of run around space! Two twin beds for two boys! They loved their room, so much so that L cried in the car because he wanted to go back. They are playing with a tic tac toe set that was metal. Front of the cabin- you can see how close our neighbors were, but never once did we really even see any one or hear anyone. This is the bear out front. E is secretly a little afraid of him, which is why she is holding Daddys hand. The front of the cabin! It has an amazing porch off of what we took to be the master. If we could ever manage to wake up before the kids do, it would have been an amazing place to sit with coffee and read. We left the door open in the evening to let the cool air in. Fire pit fun- marshmallows were to follow! The boys really wanted to help make fire- but honestly once it was burning they were pretty much not a fan of being near it at all. Which is why they eat their marshmallows from the bag and not burnt from a stick.
How to Book it
Want to book your own vacation? Here is a link to Airbnb: My referral link will get you to the site, and if you book it will also get me a little cash to book my vacation. You can also find information in that link if you’d like to list your place as a Bed and Breakfast. We talked about that a lot after staying- how it would be nice to fund your vacation home with other peoples vacations.
A girl can dream right?
Do you want to stay in that exact cabin above? I highly recommend it! Carissa was so amazing- after discovering our daughters night time dolly she is mailing her back to us!
One last Reason to Book
Vacations are expensive, the kids are young, work is busy- but those will all be true next year and the year after, and you’ll back and wonder what you’ve actually done with your time. Book the vacation, see the sights. Take the kids, take the flights. Just do it. You aren’t promised a time of retirement where the money flows freely and you still are healthy enough to see the world. So do it piece by piece while you can.
